One of my professors in vet school stated that "Pet euthanasia is the gift of a peaceful death". These are words that have become very dear to me. It is so painful to say goodbye to a beloved pet but, to have the courage to place our pet's suffering before our own is a true gift of love.
Pet euthanasia includes:
First, an injection is given to help your pet relax. This injection may take one to several minutes to take effect.
Second, an intravenous injection is given. Shortly after this injection is complete the pet will pass.

No, pet euthanasia does not hurt. The medication used for the second injection is an overdose of anesthesia and your pet will not feel any discomfort.
The whole process of putting a pet to sleep is typically between 40-90 minutes. The first injection is a heavy sedative that will allow your pet to relax and get very comfortable. The final injection is very fast acting and takes effect in about 30-60 seconds.
